In 1953, Stan Laurel (Steve Coogan) and Oliver Hardy (John C. Reilly) were no longer box-office giants. Almost as hapless as the half-witted bumblers they played in their classic films, they couldn’t find work in the US, so diminished by age, the duo set out to reconnect with their adoring fans by touring variety halls in Britain. Directed by Jon S Baird (Filth) and written by Jeff Pope (Philomena), Stan & Ollie glows with respect and affection for its title characters, their long and loyal friendship and their immortal comic brilliance. Coogan and Reilly not only excel at creating convincing impressions of one of the most famous comic teams of the last century, but they do an uncanny job of recreating a handful of their famous routines, which today mostly play as mild yet expertly timed delights.
